Have you ever tried any of “Tunis” of Joana Vasconcelos ?
The first version of this series, dated of 1994, was made of polystyrene, plaster and acrylic paint, and was presented on a catwalk where models dressed in black each wore a buni on their heads.
In 2019, THE “Tunis” have been redone in acrylic fiber and enamel paint, and the Modern Art Center of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon acquired them for his collection.
They are exhibited for the first time in the exhibition “Stories from a Collection” until 18 September 2023.
Meeting with Joana Vasconcelos : An immersion in his artistic universe
I've had, during my recent visit to CAM Lisbon, the incredible chance to meet an artist that I have admired for a long time : Joana Vasconcelos.
From Portugal, she is known for her bold and colorful creations that push the boundaries of traditional art.
I was very pleasantly surprised by his kindness and accessibility.. We discussed and shared our passion for art.
Obviously, I congratulated her on her latest works, in particular the creations for the Dior show in Paris and his tree of life in the Sainte Chapelle of the Château de Vincennes.
This encounter reinforced my admiration for his work.. His commitment to pushing the boundaries of contemporary art while arousing emotions and reflections in the public is tremendous..
Leaving the exhibition, a feeling of gratitude washed over me. And you don't know what she offered me…. to visit his studio !
