Women’s Art in the spotlight in Marseille

A Marseille, we are in the theme of the month !

Like a mirror of society, art has long denied women and creators their rightful place. Until the 19th century, these were excluded from learning art in painting and sculpture workshops. The new exhibition of Préau des Accoules would like to pay tribute to them. She aspires, wider, to question the question of women's rights, of the fight for gender equality and the defense of freedom of access to creation for all.

The power of women in societies

A first part of the course which will be offered to young audiences will thus address the question of rights in a sociological dimension., ethnological and cultural the evolution of women's rights in society, using a timeline.

Unlike Western traditions, The existing matrilineal societies represented by the African Arts Museum collections will thus be valued., Oceanians, Native Americans. This openness to the diversity of points of view and social imaginations will be a preamble to the discovery of certain major artists in the collections of the Marseille Museums.

The power of women in artistic creation

The second exhibition room will highlight the work of women in artistic creation of the 20th and 21st centuries through numerous techniques. : sculptures, tableaux, photographs, ceramics, installations and video. Original creations by artists from around the world will be presented : Laura Garcin, Louise Nevelson, Germaine Richier, Maria Helena Vieiria da Silva, Geneviève Asse, Niki de Saint Phalle, Fatima Haddad from Baya, Atsuko Tanaka, Judith Bartolani, Ghada Amer and Marie Bovo.

The works presented in this new exhibition, come from the rich collections of the Marseille Museums and the Communal Contemporary Art Fund. Through them, the story of a singular artistic personality and that of his time emerges., to raise the question of feminism, cooperation between creators, the place given to the body and its representation. Fun devices will be offered to young audiences to better discover the subject and get to grips with the heritage of the Marseille Museums.
