The famous Art Museum, of Architecture and Technology (MAAT) It is with pleasure and honor that, Portugal, is currently the center of a most electrifying artistic exhibition. I loved this discovery so much, that I can't help but share it with you.
The renowned Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos illuminates the rooms of the museum with his individual exhibition entitled Plug-in“.

These emblematic pieces are placed in dialogue with works from the EDP Foundation Art Collection, thus creating a dynamic exploration of the heritage of electricity, technology and visual arts.

The exhibition takes place on two MAAT sites, designated as SIZE Central and MAAT Gallery.

At MAAT Central, visitors can contemplate the impressive “Tree of Life” (2023), created in the context of the Portugal-France Cross Season. This piece is a true artistic marvel, which was adapted especially for this prestigious location.

La MAAT Gallery, as for her, presents seven works in total, including the unpublished piece “Drag Race” (2023). The latter establishes a surprising dialogue with “War Games” (2011), which transforms two conventional vehicles into works of art. One of them is richly decorated with gilding and feathers, while the other is covered in toy guns and filled with stuffed animals. Two major works which marked their presence at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao finally make their first appearance in Lisbon : the popular mirror mask “I’ll Be Your Mirror”(2019) and the gigantic ring “Lonely” (2018), installed outside the museum.

An exotic addition to the exhibition comes from Asia, with textile sculpture “Valkyrie Octopus” (2015), which was created for the MGM Macau complex and is now on display for the first time in Europe.

In addition to the artist's recent works, The exhibition “Plug-in” also offers the opportunity to revisit the history of Joana Vasconcelos. The exhibition presents “Strangers in the Night” (2000), who had already marked this same place during the artist's first retrospective at Medley. This first retrospective was made possible thanks to the New Artists Prize from the EDP Foundation, awarded to Joana Vasconcelos in 2000.
