The Essence of Art: Feel Rather Than Understand
Partager
“Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love.” These words, attributed to Claude Monet, sum up what I feel every time someone asks me: but what is art, really?
A universal language
Art is a vast idea, one that crosses centuries and cultures. At heart, it is a deep form of human expression: the intentional creation of works that carry meaning, emotion or ideas. Painting, sculpture, music, dance: each offers a space to express feelings, confront ideas and hold on to experiences. Art is much more than something pleasant to look at. It is a search for meaning.
The artist's journey
As artists, we explore the depths of human existence and try to turn what we observe and feel into works that speak to the soul. Every brushstroke, every note, every movement is an attempt to grasp and share a little of the complexity of the world around us.
A mirror of its time
Art also reflects the society that produces it. Throughout history, artistic movements have evolved in response to social, political and cultural change. Artists become witnesses of their time: their works capture the spirit of a moment and sometimes reveal truths we would rather not see.
The power of emotion
For me, this is the most powerful thing about art: its ability to stir emotions and create connections. A simple canvas, a melody or a dance can move us deeply, beyond any language barrier. It is communication in its purest form.
Art also keeps pushing the limits of creativity. Artists try new techniques, question conventions and defy expectations, and this constant search gives birth to new movements and to works that stand the test of time.
Nothing to understand, everything to feel
I often meet people who confess, almost apologetically, that they “don't understand art”. My answer is always the same: there is nothing to understand, everything to feel. Art requires no expertise and no prior knowledge. It is a sensory experience, an invitation to feel the emotions and messages the artist has woven into the work. That is exactly how I hope you will look at my abstract paintings: not with your head, but with your heart.
Whether it is a painting, a piece of music or a dance, art enriches our lives by showing us what it means to be human. So feel rather than try to understand: in art, emotion is the key.
And for you, what is art? I would love to know: write to me on WhatsApp. And if you enjoy these questions, you may also like my reflection on whether the artist's personality changes how we see their work.
