Three things only: a deep black, a thin square of gold, and in the middle, a square of intense red. I did not want to add anything else.
Josef Albers spent years painting squares inside squares, to see how colours change each other. Here the gold makes the red look richer still, and the black holds them both. Mixed media on a 60 × 60 cm canvas.
