Notre-Dame de Paris comes from the stained-glass windows of the cathedral. On a matte black background, small rectangles of colour laid with a palette knife: warm golds, deep blues, touches of red and orange.
The black works like the stone around the glass, and the colours look lit from behind. Victor Hugo wrote a whole novel about her. I only had a knife and some paint, but I wanted that same light.
